Red birthmarks or hemangiomas are noncancerous growths that form due to an abnormal collection of blood vessels. Skin hemangiomas that develop lesions or sores that are simply unsightly and cosmetically unacceptable may require treatment. The best approach to remove the hemangioma are Corticosteroid medication or Laser treatment. These marks grow rapidly in childhood and may require steroid treatment as well. Dr. Hiba Injibar prefers to use the V-Beam Perfecta or the V-Star laser – the pulsed dye laser for the treatment of hemangiomas. During early infancy, when hemangiomas are still growing, she prefers to perform the treatment at two to three week intervals to avoid re-growth between treatment sessions. During later years when the hemangioma has stopped growing, treatments can be performed at one month or later intervals. For adults with stable hemangiomas or port – wine stains, treatment can be started any time and may require 10 or more sessions for complete or near complete resolution.
